“In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” ~Abraham Maslow
Life constantly unfolds, and when it does, it provides an array of opportunities for us to F.A.C.E change.
Change can take on a variety of faces, it may mean that we need to let go of the past and move forward. It could mean that we need a new perspective on an old problem, a career change, or simply the willingness to try something different that isn’t part of our normal, everyday routine.
The Choices
Regardless of the change that needs to take place in our lives, the fact is that each of us faces change in a different manner.
The good news is that we have choices in how we F.A.C.E change. I have narrowed it down to 4 in an easy to remember acronym.
We can:
- Fear it – We can run, we can hide, we can pretend like it’s not happening and that we don’t have to change. Basically burying our heads in the sand like an ostrich and hoping it goes away.
- Acknowledge it – We can acknowledge that it’s there and that maybe, possibly, someday, we might have to adapt…or not! But for now we choose to ignore the reality of our need to change.
- Challenge it – We can confront it, fight it, and try to convince ourselves and everybody else around us why it doesn’t apply to us or why we cannot, will not, or will never change.
- Embrace it – We can wrap our arms around it and look for the gifts that this new opportunity might bring us. Please remember that embracing means to hold closely or to support it willingly and enthusiastically!
How About You?
So, which of the four options above do you choose most frequently?
Do you find yourself turning a blind eye to changes you need to make in your life out of fear or anxiety of what could go wrong? Are you clinging to the past, hoping that nothing will change and things will resolve themselves in time? Do you find yourself in a constant battle with something or someone because you are fighting change either literally or figuratively in your life? Or do you embrace change and you lean in so far that you cannot turn back?
3 Questions to Ask Yourself
- What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
- What if you believed that you are so powerful you could change your life TODAY?
- What if you made a decision to embrace the change you know you need to make both willingly and enthusiastically?
Now wouldn’t that be something…
Okay it’s your move!
