“Just because some people are fueled by drama doesn’t mean you have to attend the performance.” ~Cheryl Richardson.
drama: /ˈdrɑː.mə/ˈdræm.ə/ – n. a) a state, situation, or series of events involving interesting or intense conflict of forces. Origin – from the Greek word drāmat, which simply means to perform, or to act.
Have you ever noticed that some folks, no matter what is going on in their lives, seems to have a trail of drama following them?
It could be a positive event or a negative situation, it really doesn’t matter, they make it appear that their world is coming to an end either way.
Unfortunately, a lot of folks seem to think that their interactions with others is a live performance of their life in which they are the star of the show and the world is revolving around them. It is their sole purpose to draw in as many folks as possible.
You here statements like, ” ‘Oh my God, I just won the lottery, do you realize how much I will have to pay in taxes on these winnings,’ ‘It just doesn’t matter what I do for them; it is never enough,’ ‘Did you hear what they did to me?’ ‘I am so offended.’ ” and on and on and on.
Then there are the folks who when faced with any challenge, event, or situation, have to first create drama prior to taking action. As if by creating a big dramatic performance validates their work, or even worse, their sense of self-worth and value.
The Bad News
The bad news is that what the person thinks they are getting by creating the drama is attention, caring and/or concern from others is not the truth to how most healthy people respond. In fact, what they are really getting is the exact opposite effect.
You see no one like to be around a drama king or queen. It is actually quite offensive to be honest. The only folks who like hanging around drama are other drama kings and queens. This way they can all hold court together and compare lives to see who has the worst life, the most problems, and thus, in need of the most attention, caring, or concern.
I truly believe that social media has created a cesspool of drama kings and queens. It has given folks a voice and a stage to which they can project and televise their own self-created problems and challenges, along with the details of their self-important lives. We have truly created generations who are foundationally rooted in self-importance and drama.
Do you really care about the stuff that people post on Facebook or Instagram? Is it truly life-altering or is it simply dramatic entertainment?
Just think about all the political stuff posted by folks on social media, all of it intended to stir up more controversy (drama) because there is always someone who has to voice their opposing view. And so we spin…
It Gets Worse
Here’s where it takes a turn for the worse.
You see there is a Universal Law written about for thousands of years that may have started with the concept of “you reap what you sow,” This was first believed to be recorded in the book of proverbs, estimated to be written between 1015 and 975 B.C.
It evolved further in 1841 when Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Essay entitled “Compensation,” where he discussed the concept that there is a balance in life. He believed there is a reciprocity in life that we receive what we give.
You see what you put out into the world is exactly what you get back, and sometimes the return is ten-fold. In other words, when you put drama out there, what you get back is simply more…you got it…drama!
