“You are your greatest asset. Put your time, effort and money into training, grooming, and encouraging your greatest asset.” – Tom Hopkins
Over the course of the last 25 years in the leadership development business, I have come to realize a few things about developing and educating employees, more specifically in the area of Leadership Development.
Forbes magazine in June of 2019 stated that Leadership Development is a $366 Billion industry. Yes Billions with a capital ‘B.” They go on to say that a large percentage of that spending is wasted. I would totally and completely concur.
That said, it has also come to my attention that most leaders feel that it is the responsibility of the company or organization to provide leadership development. Which actually puzzles me, what if your organization doesn’t believe that they should invest in your development, do you then simply not develop as a leader? Do you just struggle and suffer through the daily challenges of being a leader? Do you fail?
Your Greatest Asset
Sometimes it may be a mental leap to think of ourselves as being our greatest asset. I personally believe that you are 100% responsible for the results you are creating in your life. If you are not getting the results you want, it is up to you to make the necessary changes required to achieve the level of success you want!
Let me say it another way. If you owned a house and you believed it was a valuable asset. Would you personally invest in it improving the value of that asset so that the return on investment when you sold it was higher than what you paid for it? Of course you would!
Here is the irony, most folks won’t personally invest in themselves even though the return on investment can be so much higher for increasing your earning potential. Some folks will invest a $1,000 in golf clubs and a $1000 in golf lessons but would never invest in themselves in a Coach or workshop where they had to spent their hard-earned cash.
So that got me thinking, what if you actually reframed how you see yourself? What if you believed the highest return-on-investment you could make was in yourself??
A Few Questions
Here are a few questions to get you retraining your mind to think differently:
- What if you truly believed that you were 100% responsible for everything that unfolded in your life?
- What if you shifted your mindset your mindset and embraced the idea that you are your greatest asset?
- What would you be doing differently?
- How would you spend your money differently?
- When was the last time you invested time, effort, or money, into yourself to improve your skills, education, or knowledge?
- Do you invest in other things (clothes, jewelry, technology, gadgets, etc.) at the expense of developing yourself?
- Are you developing yourself to be the best version of yourself you can be?
- What is it costing you to do nothing in the area of developing your skills, knowledge, and experience in your work?
- What are you willing to do to change the results you are getting in your life?
- When will you start?
If you were truly your greatest asset how might you do things differently starting today, this week, this month, or for the remainder of this year?
No one else is going to rescue you? No one else is responsible for your success, your happiness, or where you end up in life!
It is 100% your responsibility to make the choices in your life that bring you the greatest return on investment in your greatest asset!
You just have to remember that you truly are your greatest asset …
