“Money Changes Everything” – Cyndi Lauper
Two Sides of the Same Coin
Money is an extremely powerful force. There are volumes and volumes written about its impact on people and society.
As with all things there are two sides of every story, coin, and situation. What you choose to believe about that particular topic or situation determines how we act and what we say, especially when it comes to money.
Most people’s beliefs about money lie somewhere on a spectrum between two extremes. On one extreme we have the belief that money is evil and corrupts (the root of all evil). While, on the other end it is about abundance and can provide endless resources to help millions of people who are less fortunate.
Money & Early Imprinting…
We get imprinted with our beliefs about money at a very early age. We see how our parents made it, talked about it, spent it, invested it, and saved it! And that impacts what we believe and how we handle it for the rest of our lives!
If I asked you what you honestly believe about money right this minute, what would you say? What did you learn about money growing up as a kid?
For me, it was something everyone else had. It was something that you earned, if and only if, you worked extraordinarily hard. Most importantly…there was never enough!
Based on those beliefs, I found myself always working extremely hard and never feeling like I was making the amount I wanted or deserved. After all, there is never enough!
It took the realization that my beliefs about money were false in order for me to begin to shift my behaviors and how I viewed wealth.
You see, my beliefs were based on my parents beliefs that they handed down. They weren’t bad, they were simply based on what they learned about money while being raised during the depression.
It took awhile, but I now have a different belief system and it seems to be serving me well.
10 Things I Have Learned About Money:
- You have two choices when it comes to money. You can believe in scarcity and that there will never be enough. Or you can believe in abundance and that there is enough for everyone.
- Your level of income is directly proportionate to your level of self-worth and value.
- If you want to make a million dollars…find a way to provide a million dollars worth of value first.
- The Beatles were right…money can’t buy you love.
- The more I give away, the more that comes my way.
- Having a scarcity mentality only attracts more scarcity.
- There is no such thing as free money!
- Sometimes you have to invest in people instead of equipment.
- No one else is to blame, if I am not making the amount I want, it isn’t the fault of the government, the president, congress, my clients, my mother, or my kindergarten teacher Misses Schunk, who told me there was no such thing as a green flower!
- Money can’t buy happiness, joy, self worth or value – However the pursuit of it can cost you those very things.
So what about you, what do you believe about money?
And…ummmm…how’s that working for you?
